Not winning the lottery—Saving for long term travel: Part One
The story of how we’ve never won the lottery (Or “how to save enough money to quit your job and travel the world for a while”)

Things have been pretty hectic with last-minute trip prep of late, but I decided it was well past time to start working through and publish some of the nearly written blog posts that have waited in the wings for a while. So here’s some more about Australia: Part two of our brief Australian excursion took us North to the Gold Coast to spend some time with family. Staying just inland of Surfer’s Paradise, we were treated to great hospitality, warm weather, dramatic thunderstorms, plentiful wildlife, golden beaches and abundant tropical rainforest.
Three years ago, our PanAmerican road trip was just an idea that we hadn’t really made any progress on planning for. But three years ago we were given a big kick in the pants by a devastating earthquake wreaking havoc on our previously peaceful home town. Many people lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods and had their lives irrevocably changed by the events on that day. The face of our city has forever changed as a result.
We’re making progress.

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a trusted friend—Our 1994 Hilux Surf.
We have 97 days left until we leave and we’ve reduced the list of renovations to do around the house to two sides of an A4 page of refill paper. I think we’ll call that a win!

What! A $59.99 water bottle, are you mad? Have you not heard of a cup? At first we were a bit skeptical about spending big bucks on something just to drink water out of, especially since at home that stuff just comes out of the tap for free. But as it turns out, this is a pretty useful product.

Some cheap airfares made it possible to take a pre-trip trip to Australia to catch up with friends and family and to have a bit of a break from work. The first week of our trip was spent exploring Melbourne with our good friend Phillipa as our tour guide. We spent some of our time wandering around the central city, but also set aside a few days to visit some of the surrounding areas.
