Photo Friday—The Borland Road

I took this photo standing at the lake’s edge. As I stood there I could hear nothing but the sound of water gently lapping at the gravel shore, the only other people around were bobbing silently on a small boat in the distance. You could be forgiven for thinking this was a tranquil scene.

But you’d be wrong. What you can’t see in this photo is the swarm of giant sandflies (many the size of cats) desperately trying to snack on the human buffet that just parked at their doorstep.

Despite the savage wildlife, this is a pretty amazing spot. If you don’t have a boat, the easiest way to get here is along the winding Borland Road through some rather spectacular Fiordland scenery.
