We really needed to slow down. We had been travelling too fast and we were looking for somewhere to stop for a while. We hoped to not have to set up the tent every night. To know where we were going to sleep. To familiarise ourselves with a local food vendor. We also needed to save some money, because we’d budgeted for 18–24 months of travel and had used up over half of the minimum not long after arriving in the Mexican mainland. Our plan was that Guanajuato would be the place where all of this would happen.

Alaska and the Yukon, the two places are intertwined in history and location. Visit one and you will likely find it hard to resist visiting the other. A shared history of the Klondike gold rush, of wild, adventurous folk pioneering the last frontier of North America, of traditional peoples linked through trade and culture back to a time when the modern borders of the USA and Canada had no meaning. It is easy for the absent-minded traveller to forget which country they are visiting—are you in the USA or Canada? Until you try to buy something.

Our flight arrived into Anchorage shortly after midnight. As we had flown north it had become gradually lighter and lighter, so that by the time we were coming in to land we could see the rugged snowcapped peaks receding into the twilight. The excitement was building—we were finally arriving in Alaska.

Not on the same plate, but in the same day. That’s what Bangkok is all about. A city of contrasts and chaos. [This is the first in the series of posts sharing some of the photos from our last trip in 2012, while we try to be at least a little bit frugal and save for the next one in 2014.] Last year we started our jaunt around Southeast Asia in the bustling city of Bangkok. I think this city deserves a blog post all of it’s own.
