Your birthday excursion up a volcano didn’t go quite according to plan? You can’t really be too disappointed when one of the first things you see when you roll back in to town is a lady selling assorted pastries out of the back of her car.
Shivering, huddling in the tent as the nylon fabric buffets aggressively in the wind. Nibbling on a slice of cold, plastic-tasting faux cheese. Waiting for the icy rain to subside. Not exactly how I envisaged passing my birthday.
The weather became increasingly grey during our second visit to Belize. Nonetheless we found ourselves as in love with the country as we had been on the sunny beach side town of Sarteneja. But not Placencia. We still didn’t like that place.
The distance on the map didn’t look to be that far. Really, kilometre-wise it wasn’t. But how long it takes to get there can depend on which roads you drive on.
We’ve never been accused of driving the most direct route to get somewhere, so why would this be any different?
There was one time, way back in Belize when we were very nearly in Guatemala. Location: El Pilar ruins, Belize. Distance to Guatemala: 615.18 m (2018.32 ft) But ultimately we decided not to go, and returned to Mexico instead. We then of course faffed about for quite some time in Mexico. The air was thick with humidity, it was like breathing tepid soup. The roads glistened with moisture in the last of the fading light that was filtering between the rolling banks thunderclouds.
This is the one. This is the post where we finally extract ourselves from the seemingly inescapable vortex of Santa María del Tule. Don’t get too excited. We only drove a few kilometres down the road.
Oh no!—We’re approaching the event horizon of Overlander Oasis. It’s too late to escape. Deploy the rooftop tent. Crack a beer and open up the deck chairs. We may be some time.
