There were two options to renew our soon to expire Guatemalan visas. Apply for quick and easy visa extension in Guatemala city Make a border run to Belize or Mexico Guatemala City is located an easy one hour’s drive from where we were staying in Antigua. Option one. Clearly too simple. A cross-country, multi-day road trip to Belize sounded like more fun. A lot more fun. Option two it is!
The distance on the map didn’t look to be that far. Really, kilometre-wise it wasn’t. But how long it takes to get there can depend on which roads you drive on.
We promise. No more dilly-dallying. This is the one where we cross the border to Guatemala. Finally.
There was one time, way back in Belize when we were very nearly in Guatemala. Location: El Pilar ruins, Belize. Distance to Guatemala: 615.18 m (2018.32 ft) But ultimately we decided not to go, and returned to Mexico instead. We then of course faffed about for quite some time in Mexico. So long in fact that many of the friends we thought we would see again in Guatemala were, by this time, in Costa Rica, Panama, and even South America. Whoops. When your brakes fail, it might as well be on a winding mountain pass with sheer drop offs and hairpin bends. Even better if it is a pass that climbs from near to sea level up to almost 3000m, before dropping back down to below 1500m. (That’s pushing 10,000′ before returning to less than 5000′ for those of you who have not gleefully embraced the metric system.)
There we were in San Ignacio, Belize, on the border with Guatemala. “You know, I’m really looking forward to going to Guatemala…”
After much effort we managed to drag ourselves away from the peaceful beaches of Sarteneja. It was time to see what else Belize had to offer apart from amazing beaches, gorgeous seaside towns, tropical islands, spectacular snorkelling, friendly people and fantastic sunsets.
It turns out the fabled Yucatán Peninsula is mostly just a mosquito infested swamp.
