Vancouver

It had been quite some time since we had been through a big city. Some would argue that Vancouver, BC doesn’t actually fall into the category of big city, but for us it was certainly a change of pace.

Not satisfied with one trip above the Arctic Circle. Who would be? We decided it was time to investigate the Canadian Arctic and find out the Northwest Territories had to offer (or at least the small part of it that we could afford to visit—both financially and in terms of time). It seemed like the logical thing to do while we were in the neighbourhood at any rate.
Factory Roof Rack fail. It was about six the morning of the third night in our roof top tent when we heard the first loud pop, which was followed about 15 minutes later by second loud pop but this time it was accompanied by the tent shaking … oh dear.
The time had finally come to drive the Dalton Highway up to Deadhorse to officially ‘start’ our journey. While we had been camping in Fairbanks, we had met a couple from Texas who had just completed the drive themselves. They spoke of lots of mud, roadsides teeming with wildlife and dipping their feet in the ice-filled Arctic Ocean. Sounds like our kind of road trip!
The USA—it’s like New Zealand, only the junk food is cheaper and they drive on the right (wrong) side of the road. Also, for some reason they have these crazy four way stops where a roundabout would have been a good option. Although Ben seems to be warming to these after a few weeks of driving.
It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a trusted friend—Our 1994 Hilux Surf.
Some cheap airfares made it possible to take a pre-trip trip to Australia to catch up with friends and family and to have a bit of a break from work. The first week of our trip was spent exploring Melbourne with our good friend Phillipa as our tour guide. We spent some of our time wandering around the central city, but also set aside a few days to visit some of the surrounding areas.

The following are accepted facts when booking transport in Cambodia: Two hours will mean four… or more. Descriptions like ‘VIP’ and ‘Air-con’ are unrelated to the actual trip you are booking (they are simply added to make the sign eye-catching) Booking a ‘seat’ does not guarantee and actual seat, contortionist manoeuvres may be required We were told the journey from Kampot to Saigon would be about 8 hours, we thought 12 was probably a more reasonable estimate. We thought wrong…
