Close to the famous Tikal ruins in Guatemala lie the lesser-known Mayan site of Yaxhá. Despite being only 30km as the quetzal flies from its famous neighbour, the drive is a little longer. As a result far fewer tourists make the journey to explore these amazing ruins.

After much effort we managed to drag ourselves away from the peaceful beaches of Sarteneja. It was time to see what else Belize had to offer apart from amazing beaches, gorgeous seaside towns, tropical islands, spectacular snorkelling, friendly people and fantastic sunsets.

Sometimes we find ourselves standing in places which really remind us what an amazing journey we are on. In these moments we stop, we take a deep breath, we look at each other and agree that we are truly fortunate to be here. That the decision to quit our jobs, sell our stuff and move into a 4Runner with a roof top tent was the best decision we have ever made.

To visit an historical site in New Zealand often means a visit to a Māori pā site which will involve standing in a grassy field, or on a headland, looking at a ditch which marks an old fence line, perhaps another which denotes a storage area. Don’t get me wrong it’s always interesting, standing there in a spot where history was made. Even a grassy field can be enough to bring that history to life in your mind.
