Adventures with Javier

A lot of the time on this trip Emma is the chief Navigator. But sometimes Emma takes a nap and lets Javier, our Spanish-speaking, slightly scatterbrained GPS take charge of the navigational guidance.

Since we completely failed to be abducted by aliens in Nevada, we felt it was time for some adventures of a different kind.
The truth is out there… although it isn’t as interesting as we’d hoped. After spending time at Burning Man and in Las Vegas we felt we had probably come as close as possible to encountering alien life forms. But that wasn’t going to stop us trying our luck on the Extraterrestrial Highway.
All trips have their low points. This journey is no exception. Fortunately this particular low point is measured in altitude, not in how many hours we spent plotting to poison each other.
From one strange town that appeared from the dust of the Nevada desert to another. Las Vegas seemed like the obvious next stop after a week at Burning Man. At a glance they might seem similar. Both springing up out of an otherwise barren desert. Both full of bright lights and constant action, events and people, always something happening. But in reality they are two polar opposites.
Going through our photos in order to catch up on the blog posts that we are so far behind on, I came across this little gem. To be honest I had repressed the memory. The nightmares had finally subsided.
At one point the explanation on the Burning Man website read that: “Trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular colour looks like to someone who is blind.”. We think this pretty much sums it up, but we are still going to try.
Kam Wah Chung & co is a time capsule from the 1940’s with some of its contents dating back even earlier.
After a couple of months travelling with no set deadlines it was a bit of a shock to suddenly have to be at a certain place at a certain time.
It had been quite some time since we had been through a big city. Some would argue that Vancouver, BC doesn’t actually fall into the category of big city, but for us it was certainly a change of pace.
