Close to the famous Tikal ruins in Guatemala lie the lesser-known Mayan site of Yaxhá. Despite being only 30km as the quetzal flies from its famous neighbour, the drive is a little longer. As a result far fewer tourists make the journey to explore these amazing ruins.
After a somewhat snap decision to leave Belize, we found ourselves back in Mexico sooner than we had planned.
After much effort we managed to drag ourselves away from the peaceful beaches of Sarteneja. It was time to see what else Belize had to offer apart from amazing beaches, gorgeous seaside towns, tropical islands, spectacular snorkelling, friendly people and fantastic sunsets.
Our holiday from our trip hadn’t gone exactly to plan. But here we were, back in Mexico and ready to give the Yucatan another go. It might just be a mosquito infested swamp, but we knew there were still some hidden gems out there for us to discover. Including a grand monument to one of the most dramatic events in the history of our planet.
It turns out the fabled Yucatán Peninsula is mostly just a mosquito infested swamp.
Sometimes we find ourselves standing in places which really remind us what an amazing journey we are on. In these moments we stop, we take a deep breath, we look at each other and agree that we are truly fortunate to be here. That the decision to quit our jobs, sell our stuff and move into a 4Runner with a roof top tent was the best decision we have ever made.
It was only a matter of time before we were sucked into the vortex that was Mexico City. Although driving around the country of Mexico you soon realise that locally, the city is simply referred to as ‘Mexico’, or ‘DF’ (Distrito Federal). The signs simply say ‘Mexico’.
Closed campgrounds, closed roads, closed parks, closed mountains, closed shops. Seriously Colorado! What is open?
